“Disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and important, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction.”
Margaret Thatcher
It’s a crazy world we live in when people are willing to stand by their pride and proudly say ” I am on welfare and I refuse to be a pot washer, so I guess I will stay on welfare”… REALLY in 2012 that’s the attitude people are taking???
So as we all know we are currently facing rough economic times and just about everyone is starting to feel it, I remember it was a point were everyone in Bermuda thought that we wouldn’t be affected but looks like everyone was wrong. People that have been employed with a business for over 10-15 years are being made redundant, I think most people right now wake up in the morning and wonder if this will be the day they will be told that they are being made redundant. Right now no one is really secure and if you are smart you will be doing all that you can to ensure that you try to remain an asset to the company. Unfortunately not everyone feels that way, many people feel like they are owed something, like they employee should be lucky that they are working for them instead of the other way around.
Apparently this week it was announced that all foreign kitchen porters have until the end of the week to stop working and 3 weeks to leave the Island. Now of course to me this came a shock because I hadn’t heard anything about it, and then to find out that on the radio people was talking about how they would never be a kitchen porter. There are so many people out here that do not have a job and are struggling and are actually willing to take jobs like that but yet there are others out here in the EXACT same position but would rather sponge off others and live off welfare that other HARDWORKING people are paying for!!
“Pride makes us artificial and humility makes us real” in the words of Thomas Merton, no one in this life is owed a job, you are not entitled to the job of your dreams or get paid what you feel you deserve to paid, unfortunately my love it does not work like that in the real world. I understand that some people have gone to school and gotten Degree’s and stuff but that still does not guarantee that you will come back home and be handed a job in that field. A job is that… a job, people right now are just looking for something to help make ends meet and put food on the table and keep a roof over their head. Yes, there are some looking for a career but that usually comes in time. No one really likes to get up out of bed and go to work and especially not when the workload is more than what they end up taking home BUT its a stepping stone IF you look at it like that. Every job usually provides you with skills you will need for the next one or something else in life. I am not understanding why is it that people look down on someone just because of the type of job they have, a person’s job does not define who they are.
How is it that someone can feel that it is ok or have no shame at all in living off welfare, living off other’s people hard work because they feel that are greater than being a kitchen porter!! I am not understanding how you would feel proud to even say that publicly. Honestly it comes a time in everyone’s life when you need to grow up and swallow your pride and be a MAN or a WOMAN.
